PROPOSAL FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A BIBLICAL GARDEN

Work has been started to establish and maintain a Biblical Garden providing the Church community, and the wider community, with a place for contemplation, education, recreation and fellowship. We will also use the garden as a teaching garden, making the words of the Bible tangible through demonstration of the plants and their uses through all ages.

The garden will have the following major parts:

Mary’s Garden
a Peace and Meditation Garden
a Rectors’ Walk; and
a Children’s Garden.

Considerable research has already been undertaken to determine plants, trees and shrubs which have biblical significance, are suited to the site, and will flourish in the Canberra climate and in conditions of low water use which can be expected in the coming years. The planned structure will, where possible, use existing trees and will be undertaken in a series of phased development stages.

PHASE 1
Installation of a watering system.
This is essential before further landscaping or basic planting commences 2400.

PHASE 2
Soil preparation and landscaping
Hiring a handheld cultivator

PHASE 3
Constructions
Entry gate
Seat
Plinth

PHASE 4
Planting
Some plants have already been acquired or are promised
Estimated cost of plants

PHASE 5
Maintenance
Costs likely to be low, but are unknown at this stage

Benefits expected from the Garden
The project will add value to the church building and it will give a much needed privacy for contemplation, conversation and healing. The Children’s Garden will be used in teaching and as an area of quiet recreation for the Sunday School.

The Garden will have added community value not only as a retreat for local flat dwellers, but also for the wider community of Woden workers who use the church as a meeting place during the week.

Parish members involved in the development of the Garden will have a feeling of ownership of the new building and its surrounds and will benefit from community work and fellowship in the maintenance stages.
