St
Alban’s is a small church which seats about 60 people comfortably,
although regular congregations are generally smaller. The Church is
a modern octagonal shape and is specially designed as a multipurpose
worship area, lending itself to a variety of worship styles.
Worship
Style
Worship is relatively informal, friendly and ‘middle of the
road’. The main worship services follow the traditional Anglican
form of Holy Communion taken from 2nd Order Holy Communion in A Prayer
Book for Australia (1995). The readings and psalms are taken from
the Revised Common Lectionary, and the liturgical seasons and saints
days are celebrated accordingly. The worship leaders and clergy robe
in a simple style. Seating is provided on individual chairs that form
a semi circle around the altar. Simplicity and reverence are keynotes
of worship. People of different traditions feel able to worship together
comfortably and enjoy a strong sense of community. Children are welcomed
lovingly by a predominantly older congregation, and are invited to
participate in Children's Church during the first part of the 9.45am service.
They rejoin the congregation for Communion.
Other
Eucharists
A simple Eucharist is celebrated every Wednesday at 7am.
On the 4th Thursday of the month at 7pm, a small group of people gather
for a Celtic Prayer and Healing liturgy of Holy Communion. This is a gentle, meditative
time of quiet worship, with the church softly lit by candle light.
Non
Eucharistic Services
Evening prayer is said following the form of the daily services in
the prayer book, on Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm. Taize style worship
is conducted by the Canberra Taize group on the 4th Friday of the
month at 8pm.
Preaching
Preaching is generally based on the appointed readings with particular
focus being placed on the Gospel for the day. Clergy and licensed
lay ministers are rostered to preach at the Saturday and Sunday services
and occasional guest preachers are welcomed.
Music
Music from Australian Hymn Book 11, ‘Together in Song’,
is accompanied on a piano. During the Wednesday (10.30am), Saturday
(6pm) and Sunday (8am) services, music is limited to one or two meditative
hymns, whereas the 9.30am service on Sunday is a sung Eucharist.
Involvement
in worship
St Alban’s has a team of licensed lay worship leaders, readers
and intercessors who regularly participate in the main parish services.
New team members are particularly welcome and training and support
are readily available.
Fellowship
Breakfast/morning tea follows the 10.45am service on Wednesday, and
also theSunday 9.45am services, and is a great opportunity
for visitors and new comers to get to know regular parishioners.
